Dear Harvey Families,

It is hard to believe that Spring has truly sprung. The telltale clues are here, tulips that are peeking up through the ground, the days are longer and we are in the final stretch of school. Goodbye Winter, Hello Spring! “March is Reading Month” has come to an end and our students did a marvelous job reading!  We had a lot of fun reading all month long! Thank you to our teacher and parent volunteer committee for preparing a wonderful way to celebrate reaching our goals with our “Power Up for Reading theme!  A special thanks to our Reading Month Committee for making our door decorations and for creating our fun theme.

Our students in grades 3, 4, 5, and 6 will be taking the Michigan Student Test of Educational Progress (M-STEP) Assessment during the months of April and May. The M-STEP is an online assessment that is aligned with the Michigan Academic Standards in English Language Arts and Mathematics for grades 3-6, and Science and Social Studies for grade 5.

Before questions arise about your child’s classroom placement for next year, I wanted to share with you what our placement process looks like at Jack Harvey Elementary. In late spring, I will meet with each grade level team and support staff. Together, we will discuss each child and his/her unique learning style and needs.  We will then take great care to create “learning communities” to ensure that we have balanced classrooms in terms of learning style, gender, behaviors, etc.  We will place each child into a learning community in which he/she will be most successful.  If you feel your child has specific academic or behavioral needs of which our staff is unaware, please forward that information to me in writing by May 1st.  Please note that neither the teachers nor I will take specific teacher requests for the 2019-20 school year. Our staff works diligently as a team to create optimal learning communities for all of our students.

The month of April is filled with some great events.  We will hear the beautiful voices of our first graders at their concert on April 10.  Gizmos Family Math Night is April 16.  Our sixth graders will perform in their band concert on April 23, and Spring Pictures is April 24.   Another fun filled month at Harvey!

 Happy Spring!

 Mrs. Laurie Pritchard, Principal
